What do teens know about starting a business?
Turns out they know a lot more than you think. I had the honor or facilitating the Black Enterprise Teenpreneur Conference, sponsored by Wendy’s, for the 3rd time last week and it was truly remarkable. With over 80
students attending the conference, we had the opportunity to educate, empower and encourage our youth to dream beyond the usually 9-5 and become their own boss.
I was surrounded by an amazing team; I’na Saulsberry (The Starfire Group), Kevin Johnson (Johnson Media, Inc), Brandon Griffin (FYEBYE, Inc) and our program director Malla Haridat (New Designs for Life) each with a passion to teach our youth about business ownership. And I could not forget the fabulous Black Enterprise team, especially Natasha Gore and LaToya Smith.

Our next guest speaker was, Quintin Primo, owner of Capri Capital Partners, LLC. Mr. Primo shared his life story and encouraged our students to never give up on their dreams. Mr. Primo appeared on the Forbes Wealthiest Black Americans list with an estimated net worth of $300 million.
The day ended with the students exploring the Wendy’s brand and developing a new product for the company.
Day 2 of the Teenpreneur Conference was jam packed with guest speakers
and interactive activities. Students were honored to hear from Dawn Finch, owner of Pooka Pure & Simple, sharing how she made the cover of Black Enterprise and how she uses social media to promote her brand. Her session was so great that I am now a Pooka fan!
We also heard from Sree Sreenivisan, Social Media guru and Dean of Student Affairs at Columbia University. The students we so engaged with the learning how social media can affect their ability to get ahead in the future. His session was so great that I took a few notes for myself. (smile)
After an afternoon session of business development activities, students heard from the team of Starting Up Now. They facilitated a fun sales activity for students to understand the importance of identifying features and benefits when selling products.
Last but not least we had the honor of hearing from Derek Dingle, Editor and Chief of Black Enterprise and owner of Milestone Media. The students were excited to learn that Mr. Dingle was responsible for the creation of Static Shock animated series. I had no idea we had a series of Black superheroes.
Students had the opportunity to present their business ideas to the
group. My team created Teen Perspective, a news program focused on issues that teens were interested in hearing.
And after all the guest speakers, activities and business presentations the conference ended with a fabulous graduation. It was a great experience and I look forward to seeing everyone again in Columbus, OH for next year’s Black Enterprise Teenpreneur Conference.

Do you have a son or daughter that has an entrepreneurial spirit?
Does your son/daughter always come up money making ideas?
I have the privilege of facilitating the Black Enterprise Teenpreneur Conference for the third time this year. Each year I am amazed at the talent and skills of our youth and inspired to do more for the youth in my community. Last year I had the privilege of meeting Adam and Jonathan Holland, owners of AJ’s Hawaiian Iceez. AJ’s Hawaiian Iceez is a mobile shaved ice business started to help their parents with their younger sisters private school tuition. They won the 2011 Black Enterprise Teenpreneur Award for their commitment to realizing their dreams.

Guest Post by Nabukenya Muwonge
Tracy was 30 years old and too scared to pursue her dream. Her father’s comments and complaints kept ringing in her head: “you’re supposed to be settled, you’re old now. When I was your age I had my Masters and my own house……”
But the truth of the matter was that even though Tracy was good at her job, it was strangling her spirit. Conventional wisdom, the credit crunch and the general instability of the economy kept silencing the panic. “You can’t make money as a coach!” one person said. “Being a consultant is really, really hard” said another. “It’s better to have a permanent position….” her Mom said, over and over and over, anytime she suspected Tracy was going to take the leap. Always research your competition to keep up with trends in your industry.
Entrepreneurs make the mistake of researching their competition in the beginning stages of their business but often forget to keep an eye out throughout their entrepreneur journey. With technology ever changing and new and improved resources available, you need to make sure you are ahead of the game. Schedule a few hours out of the week to research your competition and make sure you stand out from the crowd.
#PinkPost Affirmation of the Week
I am worthy of the abundance that my business brings to my life.

You are a Startup, So Act like a Startup!
You do not need a fancy office, the newest iPad or to take your clients to five star restaurants for lunch every day. You are a startup so act like a start up. Startup capital is limited and is the bloodline of your business. You need to maintain low overhead and learn to barter for additional business services you may need. Start thinking like a frugal entrepreneur and keep track of your expenses.

It’s International Women’s Day
Today we salute the many women who are mothers, sisters, friends, coworkers and so much more. Today is your day to stand tall and be proud of all the challenges, accomplishments and things to come.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of celebrating International Women’s Day a day early at the Tastemakers Magazine Tweetup featuring Sophia Nelson. If you don’t know who Sophia Nelson is then you need to find out after you read this post.
She is the author of “Black Women Redefined” and an “accomplished business woman on the move”. We were blessed with her presence and words of wisdom focused on why we need to redefine ourselves. This book is not just for black women but for all women. Still in 2012, women are discriminated and stereotyped into categories that are not befitting to us as a whole. We are pushed around and forced to play by rules that were not designed for us to win.
I left the Tweetup with my head held high reclaiming my power and prestige as a woman! I was surrounded by powerful and and courageous women that helped confirm that we are not only beautiful but worthy of all our accomplishments.
